A whole world inside one crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera, about 600 metres deep and close to 20 kilometres across, in the highlands of northern Tanzania.
Its floor holds grassland, swamps, forest and a soda lake, home to a dense population of animals that rarely leave. It is one of the best places in East Africa to see black rhino, and Maasai herders still share the wider conservation area with the wildlife.

Where is the Ngorongoro Crater?
It is in the highlands of northern Tanzania, between Lake Manyara and the Serengeti, about three to four hours’ drive from Arusha.
How long do you need at Ngorongoro?
One to two nights is ideal. A single day on the crater floor is enough for the main game drive.
Can you see the Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater?
Yes. Lion, elephant, buffalo and black rhino are all seen on the crater floor, and leopard live in the forests around it.
Can you see rhino in the crater?
Yes. It is one of East Africa’s best places to see black rhino, usually from a distance on the open grassland.
What is the best time to visit Ngorongoro?
The wildlife stays in the crater all year. June to October is driest but busiest, while the green season is quieter.
How cold does it get on the rim?
The rim is over 2,000 metres high, so mornings and evenings are cold. Bring a fleece or warm jacket.
What is Olduvai Gorge?
It is an archaeological site between the crater and the Serengeti, where fossils of early human ancestors were found. There is a small museum on site.
Can Ngorongoro be combined with other parks?
